i know that on some systems with windows 7 my video could be played, but i was unable everytime to do so in my own kinovea - (i also reinstalled win 7 - 64bits to try, with all kinovea versions from 0.8.3 - 0.8.13)

"failure: unable to open the file: problem while initializing decoder"

for example, on my coach' macbook pro with win7 bootcamp (32 bits) the video could be played.

question: which codec has to be installed to view this file?
also vlc does not want to do it sad

i could play it with quicktime, but it's horrible because of the slowness.

(i don't have any filesharing account, but i recommend mediafire to download it in a short time wink )

thank you for your support!

Hi, thanks for the sample. I can read it with version 0.8.7.
There is no codec to install that can help with this problem, it's the decoding library that must be fixed (similar to VLC)…

user "haeferl" on the forum sent me a video with a similar issue a while ago (also ski jumping), maybe they come from the same samsung camera ?
Anyway, I still need to report this to FFmpeg for more information.

It corresponds to bug 209.

hehe yes, but this video doesn't come from his video cam, we all use samsung cameras which (probably) uses the same container format, i don't know.

maybe haeferl's cam is a samsung hmx20c, i'm not sure

the cam which produced this video is a Samsung HMX-S10.

is there no chance to include the new x264 / h264 codec in kinovea or wouldn't help that?

Have Windows Vista 32
with both 0.8.7 and 0.8.13 installed

The following 2 types of MP4 files (from a Samsung S10 camera) have errors in 0.8.13, but not in 0.8.7

1. Thumbnails dont show
2. Try to open with this error "failure: unable to open the file: problem while initializing decoder"

I now use a workaround:

Using free Pazera, convert my MP4s to AVI container, MJPEG codec files - in bulk

Open these AVI files with Kinovea for analysis.

Save Kinovea 8.13 files as MP4 (I can't read these codec 20 files in Quicktime and other programs)

Convert saved Kinovea MP4s to AVI MJPEG (readable by QT, Win Media Player, youtube, etc.)

The last step of conversion should not be necessary…
To read the files exported by Kinovea in other programs you may need to download the Xvid codec or the "FFDShow tryouts" codec, or use VLC. YouTube should accept them right away without conversion.

Thanks Joan.  Unfortunately, VLC is useless to me since I can't advance right and left by frame.  Everything reads the MJPEG AVI files, even though I don't like them:)

Follow-up:
With the integration of the update from the FFmpeg library for the next version, these particular files (bug 209, files from skiflyer and haeferl - Samsung camcorders) are now well supported (again).

I have Kenovea 0.8.15 on a new Windows 7 PC.  I also installed the latest Xvid codec.  But Windows Media Player and Quicktime cannot play the .mp4 file that is created by Kinovea.

On another PC, WMP plays the mp4 OK, but Quicktime cannot play it.  (Quicktime says: "the move contains some invalid data")

My wife and her staff were planning to use Kinovea for tennis instructions this summer, but this does not look good.

Thank you.
