What is Kinovea and who is it for ?

Kinovea is a video analysis software dedicated to sport.
It targets primarily the coaches, athletes and medical professionals.
It can also be useful in ergonomics and animation study.

Is Kinovea available in my native language ?

Version 0.8.15 of Kinovea is available in the following locales :

English, French, Dutch, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese and Swedish.


Can I copy and redistribute Kinovea ?

Yes. Use of Kinovea is subject to the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2.
The distribution of modified version must be accompanied by the distribution of source code.

Can I use Kinovea in the context of a for-profit business ?

Yes.
You can for example sell video analysis services built around Kinovea or monetize data created with Kinovea.


What are the supported operating systems ? Is there a version for Mac, Linux ?

Kinovea is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
There is currently no version available for Mac OS X operating system, nor for GNU/Linux.


What are the minimum requirements ?

CPU : 1GHz.
RAM : 256 Mo.
Screen resolution : 1024×600 pixels.
Software : Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista, 7) with .NET framework 2.0 or higher.


How do I install Kinovea ?

Check that your computer complies with the minimum requirements. Install the .NET framework if necessary.
An installer is available for download on the website. Launch the installer and follow the instructions given.


How do I update my version ?

You can use the update dialog box included into Kinovea to download the latest installer program.
Once downloaded, launch the installer and follow its instructions.


What are the file formats supported as input ?

The following multimedia containers are supported :
AVI, MPG, MOV, WMV, MP4, FLV, 3GP, MKV, VOB, MOD, TOD.
Numerous compression algorithms are supported, including DV, DivX, Xvid, H.264, MJPEG, Theora…


Can I use Kinovea with High Definitions (HD) video files ?

Most HD formats are supported but support for AVCHD is only partial.
Some functions of Kinovea like synchronizing two videos can become hard to use with large images.
In those cases, it is advised to reduce selection to the minimum possible and voluntarily decrease speed.


What are the camcorders compatible with Kinovea ?

For live capture, the camcorder must be capable of live streaming to the computer. (HDV, DV, Webcam, Network camera).
If the camcorder is not capable of live streaming, you will have to use an analog output on the camcorder (HDMI output or S-Video for example), and a corresponding input card or device at the computer.

For playback and video analysis, most camcorders create video files that are supported in Kinovea. Some camcorders recording AVCHD to hard drive or flash memory are known to produce files that are only partially supported. In those case you may have to convert the files prior to use.


Why the speed of my video decrease on its own ?

This happens when Kinovea detects it cannot extract images from the video fast enough to keep up the frame rate asked.
The speed stabilize itself at a sustainable threshold. However it is advised to decrease it manually again to get a smoother playback.

Experimental versions are released on the forum.
These versions contains new features with probably new bugs and usability issues that you can test and help improve with your feedback.
